Great news! Dogwood Alliance, SELC, NCCSC, and other partners and devoted citizens in Robeson County joined together to ensure “Active Energy Group would not move forward with its plans to build a biomass plant that would have exported wood pellets to Europe and Asia while increasing water and air pollution at the site” in Lumberton NC.
In fact, in late March, “Active Energy agreed to sell the site for $4.65 million to Phoenix Investors LLC, a commercial real estate firm focused on the revitalization of former manufacturing facilities—meaning an end to plans to construct a wood pellet mill there for export to Europe and Asia.” – SELC

In a statement from Dogwood Alliance, “North Carolina is the largest exporter of wood pellets in the nation. Eastern NC continues to be heavily logged from the four existing Enviva wood pellet facilities. Even without the additional impact of the AERP facility, Robeson County faces intensive logging from Enviva and other industrial logging operations.
THE CLOSURE OF THIS FACILITY IS ALSO A WIN FOR OUR CLIMATE. THE BURNING OF THESE PELLETS WOULD HAVE ADDED THOUSANDS OF TONS OF CARBON DIOXIDE TO THE ATMOSPHERE, THE EQUIVALENT OF 155,580 CARS ON THE ROAD.”
