Danna Smith, Executive Director of Dogwood Alliance, a Coalition Partner of NC Climate Solutions Coalition, shares some sobering information in an article she has written for Medium.com. In her article we learn that the Southeastern region of the United States has a logging rate that is four times greater than that of South American rainforests. Most of us in the climate change fight will likely be shocked to learn this, thinking the rain forests have sweeping and terrifying deforestation going on already. Yet, the US government and our US forest industry – the largest forest industry in the world, she writes – are promoting even more logging and deforestation than ever before. In light of the impacts of climate change, where the impacts have been seen in our country in a frighteningly vivid way over the past few years, it should shock anyone to learn this.
