National Call: Midterm Redux: Is climate back on the table?

November 15, 2018 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

On Thursday, November 15, at 4:00 pm Eastern / 3:00 pm Central / 2:00 pm Mountain / 1 p.m. Pacific time, the Climate Reality Check team will hold the latest in our series of national conference calls to help strengthen community organizing on climate, entitled:

The Results Are In: Climate and the Midterm Elections

Even if you can’t make it on the 15th, register to receive a recording of the call.

This election season, the climate movement and people-powered campaigns all across the country took on the fossil fuel industry and its deep pocketed shills in a fight to install progressive champs in every tier of government and pass initiates to advance climate action.

The results were both staggering and heart-breaking.

  • The Democratic win of the House swept in a handful of new climate-focused progressives – and removed a number of climate deniers from office.
  • More than half of the new Democratic freshman class has signed the No Fossil Fuel Money Pledge.
  • Democrats running on clean energy platforms won gubernatorial races in Illinois, Wisconsin, Nevada, Kansas, Maine and New Mexico.
  • Voters in Nevada approved an initiative to boost renewable energy to 50 percent of the state’s electricity by 2030, but Arizona voters rejected a similar initiative.
  • Colorado rejected a ballot initiative that would have put new restrictions on fracking. Washington’s initiative for the nation’s first carbon fee was rejected. But Florida passed an initiative to protect its waters for drilling.
  • The Senate gained at least two new members with poor records on confronting the climate crisis.

And now that these victories and losses have played out – the question is:

What will these new – local, state, federal – landscapes mean for climate action?
